DISABLED STUDENT UNIT COORDINATION

• Pursuant to Article 15 of Law No. 5378 on the Amendment of Certain Laws and Decree Laws and the relevant regulation on "Disabled Student Units of Higher Education Institutions" published in the Official Gazette dated June 20, 2006, numbered 26204, Gaziantep University Disabled Student Unit (Barrier-Free Life Unit) was established on September 13, 2007, in accordance with the regulation accepted at the Senate meeting of the university on January 14, 2020, and directly connected to the Gaziantep University Rectorate.

• The unit aims to minimize the difficulties faced by our disabled students during their education and campus life due to disabilities and to ensure cooperation among relevant  parties in eliminating barriers.

• The unit provides services not only to disabled students but also to academic staff and personnel.

• Efforts are made to raise awareness of disability issues at our university.

• The unit works to identify and eliminate barriers encountered by disabled students throughout their higher education experience and to create an "accessible campus."

• A web page has been prepared where you can see the establishment, working style, past and future activities, printed materials, and photos of the unit's activities, and you can share your concerns with us at any time using our contact information.

• The Disabled Life Unit serves on the ground floor of the Health Culture Sports Directorate building during working hours on weekdays.

• Meetings have been held with disabled students to determine their needs.

• An inventory has been created based on the type of disability of visually impaired students.

• Learning materials have been provided for visually impaired students.

• The unit has started employing its first part-time student.

• Adjustments have been made for disabled students in the faculties and departments where they study (ramps, disabled toilets, elevators, etc.).

• Adjustments have been made for disabled students in newly constructed buildings.

• An academic advisor and administrative representative have been appointed from each academic unit to assist disabled students.

• A ramp has been built on the ground floor of our dining hall building to facilitate access for disabled students to upper floors, allowing them to receive their meals in a separate room.

• Participation was ensured in the "Accessible Universities Workshops":   

 - The second workshop was held at Middle East Technical University in 2008.  

  - The third workshop was held at Istanbul University in 2009.    

- The fourth workshop was held at Ege University in 2010.

• Information sessions were held for disabled students at our university in 2019 and 2020.

• Independent living classes were provided to visually impaired students in 2019.

  • During Registration:

  •  Introducing the unit to all students and families, both disabled and non-disabled, at a table set up during the university's registration week.   

  •  Establishing initial contact with disabled students currently studying at our university and those who will start their studies.

  • After Registration:   

  •  Contacting students who declare their disability status.   

  •  Communicating with administrative and academic units to address difficulties encountered by disabled students in campus life.   

  •  Preparing promotional brochures to introduce the campus to disabled students.    

  • Providing training to academic advisors appointed to assist disabled students and to volunteer students.    

  •  We expect your contributions to the unit's efforts to create an accessible campus by removing barriers.    

  • We also expect assistance from departments to ensure the participation of disabled students in events.

  • Our library has a separate entrance for disabled students, and a separate room with visual and auditory materials has been set up, allowing access to Braille alphabets, etc., with printer support. We expect your assistance in further improving our services.

  • Link service is available on campus every half hour to ensure access, and we also request the inclusion of specially designed buses, minibusses, and taxi services for disabled students.
